EUR/USD Technical Analysis as of August 4, 2026

The EUR/USD pair is consolidating near the 1.1500 mark as market players are being extra cautious ahead of key US labor market data due later this week.

Possible technical scenarios:

As evidenced by what we see on the daily chart, EUR/USD has reached descending trendline resistance. Its change and upward exit could push the price toward 1.1682, marked by the dotted line. If, however, the current downside reversal is confirmed, the downside target will be the June–July lows around 1.1324, marked by the dotted line.

EURUSD_D1

Fundamental drivers of volatility:

Today’s primary focus will be on the US JOLTS Job Openings report, with the main event of the week being Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls release, which could significantly alter expectations regarding the Fed's policy trajectory.
The euro continues to find support from persistent inflationary pressures within the Eurozone. In July, annual headline CPI accelerated to 2.9% from 2.8% in the previous month, while core inflation picked up to 2.5%, exceeding forecasts. These figures reinforced expectations of further ECB monetary tightening, with markets already pricing in more than two rate hikes by spring next year.
Meanwhile, the dollar's outlook remains heavily dependent on upcoming US macroeconomic releases. Following the July Fed meeting, the probability of a September rate cut shifted, but strong employment data could reignite hawkish Fed expectations and lift the greenback.
Short-term EUR/USD dynamics this week will be driven by US macroeconomic indicators. Weaker readings may bolster expectations of a dovish Fed stance and lift the euro, whereas strong figures could restore the dollar's upper hand and keep the European currency under pressure.

Intraday technical picture:

On the 4H chart, it remains uncertain whether EUR/USD can hold above 1.1494, given the current consolidation beneath broad downtrend resistance. The pair remains at a crossroads, caught between a potential rally toward 1.1682 and a pullback toward support at 1.1399 or lower.

GBP/USD Technical Analysis as of August 4, 2026

The GBP/USD pair is trading within a narrow range as traders await US labor market data, which will dictate dollar sentiment in the short term.

Possible technical scenarios:

Based on the current developments on the daily chart, GBP/USD continues to trade within a year-long symmetrical triangle. The price is holding below the upper boundary and pulling back. Against this backdrop, another decline toward the July lows and further toward 1.3215 remains plausible.

GBPUSD_D1

Fundamental drivers of volatility:

Investor focus on Tuesday is centered on the JOLTS Job Openings release, ahead of the main event of the week—the US Nonfarm Payrolls report—which could heavily influence expectations for the Fed's policy path.
Support for the British pound remains constrained following the Bank of England meeting. Despite a more hawkish vote split within the Monetary Policy Committee, BoE Governor Andrew Bailey signaled that the central bank is not considering interest rate hikes in the near term. This dovish rhetoric dampened policy-tightening expectations and weighed on the appeal of the British currency.
Further pressure on the pound stems from a firmer US dollar. Following the Fed's shift away from forward guidance, markets have become far more sensitive to macroeconomic statistics. Any upbeat US employment figures could reinforce expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates, lending support to the dollar.
Short-term GBP/USD dynamics will be largely determined by incoming US data. Strong employment statistics could strengthen the dollar and increase pressure on the pound, whereas disappointing figures might dial back Fed tightening expectations and support a recovery in the British currency.

Intraday technical picture:

The 4H chart suggests that GBP/USD is holding in the middle of a broad 1.3215–1.3630 range, leaving room for a move toward either boundary.

USD/JPY Technical Analysis as of August 4, 2026

The USD/JPY pair plummeted late last week following foreign exchange market interventions by Japanese authorities, though market players remain divided over their long-term efficacy. Despite the yen's recent strengthening, upside potential remains capped in the absence of more decisive action from the Bank of Japan.

Possible technical scenarios:

During the intervention-driven selloff, USD/JPY reached support at 155.03 before recovering toward resistance at 157.90. Should the pair manage to break out and consolidate above 157.90, the next upside target lies at 158.93.

USDJPY_D1

Fundamental drivers of volatility:

The yen continues to receive underlying support from expectations of potential joint currency interventions by Japan and the US. According to major banking institutions, coordinated action between the two nations significantly enhances the effectiveness of FX operations and lowers the likelihood of renewed large-scale speculative yen selling. An additional stabilizing factor is Japan’s intention to utilize the Fed's FIMA Repo Facility, which expands intervention capabilities without requiring the outright sale of US Treasuries.
That being said, fundamental factors still favor the dollar. Unless the Bank of Japan accelerates its rate-hiking cycle while the Fed maintains a relatively hawkish monetary stance, the yield differential will continue to underpin demand for the dollar against the yen.
Shifting Fed policy expectations also play a role. Growing doubts over the US central bank's willingness to aggressively push inflation lower could cap dollar gains. However, this factor has yet to alter the broader picture, as USD/JPY prospects remain firmly anchored to US-Japan interest rate differentials.
In the short term, the yen may find support from the ongoing threat of official intervention; however, establishing a sustained downtrend in USD/JPY will require more aggressive policy tightening by the Bank of Japan alongside a further softening of Fed rate expectations.

Intraday technical picture:

The 4H chart suggests that USD/JPY is approaching the 157.90 level with small bars, setting the stage for a potential breakout. If successful, the price may continue climbing toward the 158.93 target.

USD/CAD Technical Analysis as of August 4, 2026

The USD/CAD pair is consolidating as conflicting fundamental drivers pull the market in opposite directions. A recovery of crude oil prices is providing support to the Canadian dollar, whereas demand for the US dollar remains supported by persistent geopolitical uncertainty and hawkish Fed expectations.

Possible technical scenarios:

On the daily chart, USD/CAD has moved upward from the 1.4013 support level, maintaining technical recovery potential toward 1.4108.

USDCAD _D1

Fundamental drivers of volatility:

Developments surrounding US-Iran negotiations remain a central market driver. While Washington has signaled a willingness to resume dialogue, Tehran denies any active talks.
Tensions are further heightened by reports of strikes on US facilities and ongoing risks to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. These developments are supporting crude oil prices, which typically benefits the Canadian dollar as a major commodity exporter.
In the meantime, geopolitical risks continue to spur safe-haven demand for the US dollar. On top of that, markets continue to price in the possibility of at least one more Fed rate hike before year-end, limiting downside for the greenback. CME FedWatch data currently assigns roughly a 64.7% probability to a September rate increase.
Investor attention this week will also focus on labor market reports. Today brings the US JOLTS Job Openings release, followed by official employment reports from both the US and Canada on Friday. Strong US data could bolster hawkish Fed expectations and support USD/CAD, whereas a further rally in oil prices could cap pair upside by strengthening the Loonie.
Oil market dynamics remain a key headwind for further USD/CAD gains. Any escalation in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a fresh surge in crude prices, improving Canada's terms of trade and boosting the Canadian dollar.

Intraday technical picture:

Judging by the look of things on the 4H chart, USD/CAD retains sufficient room for an upside move within the 1.4013–1.4108 range.

XAU/USD Technical Analysis as of August 4, 2026

Gold continues to consolidate as buyers’ activity is restrained by traders awaiting fresh policy signals from the Fed.

Possible technical scenarios:

Gold prices are holding above $4,000 per ounce, though the trading range continues to compress. Quotes remain bound within the 4002.27–4209.95 range, consolidating near its lower boundary. A clear breakout and consolidation below 4002.27 would open the door for a slide toward support at 3886.25.

XAU/USD_D1

Fundamental drivers of volatility:

The primary catalyst for the market this week will be a slate of US labor market data, including JOLTS, ADP employment, and Friday’s Nonfarm Payrolls report. Weak data could heighten dovish Fed expectations, pressure the dollar, and boost demand for the precious metal.
An additional layer of uncertainty stems from ongoing US-Iran geopolitical tensions. Donald Trump noted ongoing dialogue with Tehran, though Iranian officials denied any contacts. Lingering geopolitical friction maintains baseline safe-haven demand for gold, though the absence of direct escalation is capping aggressive buying.
The primary cap on gold's upside remains US monetary policy expectations. Following the latest Fed meeting, markets are pricing in roughly a 65% chance of a September rate hike. Aside from that, New York Fed President John Williams reiterated that while the central bank expects inflation to gradually cool, it stands ready to raise rates further if necessary. Persistent hawkish rate expectations continue to support the dollar and limit gold’s upside potential.

Intraday technical picture:

The 4H chart reveals that XAU/USD is forming a descending triangle within the 4002.27–4209.95 range, resting on support at 3959.23 marked by the dotted line. While price often exits downward from such formations, trading currently remains bound inside the triangle near the midpoint of the range. Should Friday’s US labor market report come in strong, gold could face a sharp selloff driven by a surging US dollar. A decisive breakout below 3959.23 could extend losses toward the immediate target of 3886.25 and below.

Brent Technical Analysis as of August 4, 2026

Brent crude prices are recovering after plummeting in the previous session, as uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran situation continues to overhang the market.

Possible technical scenarios:

Given the unfolding scenario on the daily chart, Brent crude has approached resistance at 85.70. Failure to clear this barrier could lead to a decline back within the 81.39–85.70 range. Otherwise, a breakout and consolidation above 85.70 would pave the way toward last week’s highs, and upon a successful retest, toward the 95.18 level.

Brent_D1

Fundamental drivers of volatility:

Geopolitical factors remain the primary price driver. Despite statements from US President Donald Trump regarding potential renewed talks, Tehran has denied any contact. As a result, markets cannot fully price out the risk of new escalation, keeping a geopolitical premium embedded in crude prices.
Oil prices are receiving additional support from ongoing supply disruptions along critical maritime transit routes. Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains well below historical averages, while recent security incidents involving commercial vessels underline ongoing maritime risks. Conditions also remain tense in the Red Sea, where tanker rerouting continues to constrain global crude supply.
The physical market is also displaying signs of tightening supply-demand fundamentals. According to Goldman Sachs estimates, global commercial oil inventories shrank by approximately 6.3 million barrels per day over the past two weeks. This drawdown was driven by reduced exports from the Persian Gulf and Russia, coupled with rising crude imports across Asian economies, particularly China.
In the short term, crude oil prices will remain overwhelmingly driven by geopolitical headlines and supply flows through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

Intraday technical picture:

As evidenced by the 4H chart, Brent crude sits at a pivotal juncture directly below the 85.70 level. Depending on whether the quotes manage to overcome it, prices will either pull back toward support at 81.39 or continue rising toward 89.04, marked by the dotted line.
